Work Samples

I take every step to ensure that my code is as web standards compliant as I can make it without sacrificing quality. In addition, my projects are tested in multiple browsers and platforms, whenever possible, in order to account for differences in the way browsers interpret code.

JavaScript/JSON/DOM/XML Exploration :: Programming Exercise

JavaScript/JSON/DOM/XML Exploration

Programming Exercise

This was a multi-part exercise I did to re-familiarize myself with JavaScript and DOM manipulation. I also took this as an opportunity to understand the basics behind AJAX before attempting to learn jQuery/Prototype/etc. Page data is pulled from XML, converted into JSON, which then gets converted into XHTML. In addition, I tried to learn more about XML by using both the push and pull methods to transform my XML, as well as creating my own DTD.

State University Credit Union :: Design Exercise

State University Credit Union

Design Exercise

This was a design exercise I did to practice my XHTML/CSS skills with a little jQuery experimentation. The "client" is a financial institution that targets college age students. I tried to keep it clean and simple to avoid overwhelming students that may be taking control of their finances for the first time.

Cougars for Kids :: Senior Project

Cougars for Kids

The goal for this project was to create an information management system for our client, Cougars for Kids. As the Lead Developer, I was responsible for the majority of the application programming and design.

PHANTOMX|NET :: Personal Site

PHANTOMX|NET

Personal Site

PHANTOMX|NET was my previous personal web site. This particular design was an attempt to make an entire blogging system from scratch. Due to an increase in school projects and tests, I never got around to finishing the backend part of the site.

SPARROWONE :: File Server Interface

SPARROWONE

File Server Interface

While in college, I created a server that would allow me to share files with the other people in my home. Due to heat and noise issues, I had to leave the server off when not in use. This became a problem when others needed to store or access files on the server. To fix the issue, I decided to develop a web-based interface that allowed users to turn the server on and off remotely.

Joseph Kirkland :: Portfolio Concept

Joseph Kirkland

Portfolio Concept

This was a design exercise I did to take a break from my studies. The "client" was a friend of mine that was fresh out of college and was looking for his first teaching job. He wanted something simple and easy to navigate. This idea is a basic 2 column portfolio concept for him to showcase some of his work. Potential employers would use the navigation menu on the left and content would update on the right.

Table of Contents Concept

This was a design exercise I did to take a break from my studies. The "client" was a friend of mine that was fresh out of college and was looking for his first teaching job. He wanted something simple and easy to navigate. This design was an attempt to put all the content on a single page. Clicking on an item would open up the list accordion style and the content would appear below.
